⚔️ Early 1900s: Liberal Italy & World War I
At the start of the 20th century, Italy was a young, unstable kingdom, struggling with poverty and political divisions. Despite being part of the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary, Italy switched sides in World War I (1915-1918) after the secret Treaty of London promised them land.

Battle of Caporetto (1917) – A disastrous defeat against Austria!

Vittorio Veneto (1918) – Italy finally wins, but at a huge cost (600,000 dead).

"Mutilated Victory" – Italy didn’t get all the land they wanted, leading to massive protests.

This frustration set the stage for… FASCISM!

👨‍✈️ The Rise of Mussolini & Fascist Italy (1922-1943)
In 1922, Benito Mussolini and his Blackshirts marched on Rome, forcing the king to make him Prime Minister. Soon, Italy became a one-party dictatorship:

Cult of Personality – Mussolini posed as a strongman, controlling media, banning opposition.

Invasion of Ethiopia (1935) – Used poison gas to conquer Africa (condemned by the League of Nations).

Alliance with Hitler – The Pact of Steel (1939) tied Italy to Nazi Germany.

But World War II was a disaster for Italy:

Failed invasions of Greece & North Africa – Had to be bailed out by Germany.

Allied Invasion (1943) – Sicily fell, Mussolini was arrested, and Italy switched sides!

Mussolini’s End (1945) – Captured by partisans, executed, and hung upside down in Milan!
