Mediterranean monk seal pup birth on an open beach (NMPANS)

Описание: Για τέταρτη συνεχή χρονιά γινόμαστε μάρτυρες μιας θαυμαστής αλλαγής στην συμπεριφορά των θηλυκών φωκών! Επιστρέφουν πλέον συστηματικά στις ανοιχτές παραλίες και στο άπλετο φως του ελληνικού ήλιου για να γεννήσουν και να γαλουχήσουν τα μικρά τους. Επιβεβαιώνουν έτσι την άποψη των αρχαίων Ελλήνων, οι οποίοι τις θεωρούσαν προστατευόμενες του θεού Απόλλωνα, αφού τις περιέγραφαν να λιάζονται στις παραλίες της Ελλάδας. Πριν λίγες μέρες μάλιστα, οι κάμερες απομακρυσμένης παρακολούθησης που τοποθετήσαμε για αυτό τον σκοπό (σε συνεργασία με τον ΟΦΥΠΕΚΑ) κατέγραψαν τη γέννηση σε ανοιχτή παραλία και τις πρώτες μέρες της ζωής ενός νεογέννητου στον Πυρήνα του Εθνικού Θαλάσσιου Πάρκου Αλοννήσου Βορείων Σποράδων, όπου η μακρόχρονη προστασία του είδους έχει γίνει πράξη και παράδειγμα για την λειτουργία των θαλάσσιων προστατευόμενων περιοχών. Το γεγονός αυτό μας χαροποιεί ιδαίτερα, καθώς η MOm δραστηριοποιείται αδιάλλειπτα στην προστασία του Εθνικού Πάρκου τα τελευταία σχεδόν 40 χρόνια!

For the fourth consecutive year, we are witnessing a remarkable change in the behavior of female mediterranean monk seals! They now systematically return to open beaches and the full light of the Greek sun to give birth and nurse their young. In doing so, they confirm the view of the ancient Greeks, who considered them protected by the god Apollo, describing them as basking on the beaches of Greece.

Just a few days ago, the remote monitoring cameras we installed for this purpose (in collaboration with NECCA) captured the birth on an open beach and the first days of life of a newborn in the Core of the National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades, where long-term protection of the species has become a reality and an example for the management of marine protected areas.

This sight is a delight for us, as MOm has been continuously active in protecting the National Park for nearly 40 years!
