Gabrielle Calvocoressi reads from their poetry collection in progress, "The New Economy," and thinks into what it means to spend a lifetime building the imaginative and imagined vessel of the body and how that forms and subverts the vessel of the poem.
Calvocoressi is a poet, editor, essayist, and an associate professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They are the author of The Last Time I Saw Amelia Earhart (Persea Books, 2005); Apocalyptic Swing (Persea Books, 2009), a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; and Rocket Fantastic (Persea Books, 2017) and winner of the Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry. Calvocoressi’s work considers the effects of power, trauma, and compassion on the private and public body, particularly in relation to gender and the human vessel.
At Radcliffe, they plan to write a fourth book of poems alongside a series of essays/introspections about how working with the lyric poem could help process the surprise, confusion, and terror of entering perimenopause in a nongendered body.
