Putin has arrived in India for a three-day visit and is scheduled to meet PM Modi as India hosts the BRICS Summit. India is currently hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12–13, 2026. Held at the Bharat Mandapam convention centre, this marks India’s fourth time holding the BRICS Chairship. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is steering the expanded 11-member bloc under the official theme: "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability".
The Modi-Putin meeting comes just ahead of the BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, which will bring together leaders from the expanded BRICS grouping amid major global geopolitical tensions, including the Ukraine conflict, the West Asia crisis and growing US-China rivalry.
China-India diplomacy is also in focus, with Beijing confirming that a bilateral meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping is being arranged during Xi's India visit for the BRICS summit.
PM Modi is also expected to hold talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, adding another important dimension to India's BRICS diplomacy.
The Modi-Putin talks come as India and Russia discuss strategic cooperation, trade, energy, defence and major global issues. Modi’s meeting with Iran’s President Pezeshkian is also significant amid the escalating West Asia conflict and Iran’s role as a BRICS member.
