Time lapse of a 35 minute fabrication of a Mikey Box 1.0 UV-C germicidal irradiation UVGI chamber. Build price is about $75. Operating cost is about $0.07 per mask sterilized. Expected life of device is 4,000 masks or 8,000 light activations (mask is sterilized on both sides). The Mikey Box 1.0 and 2.0 utilize a battery operated UV-C light source (Steripen made by HydroPhoton, a wholly owned subsidiary of Katadyn). Proposed cycle time is 90 seconds per mask side or 180 seconds total. UV dosing studies are underway with a target of 1 Joule per square centimeter of material exposed (1 J/cm’2) to meet the healthcare industry standards of 99.9% inactivation rate of viruses/bacteria/spores. UV light in the 253.7nm wavelength disrupts the DNA or RNA of viruses/bacteria/spores and prevents those pathogens from being able to infect individuals.
Live virus testing at a major research hospital is planned for mid to late April, 2020.
