This was one of the last sequences I storyboarded for Trolls 3. In the launch I was told "we have no more budget to build new assets or environments, so everything has to take place at the golf course using only what already exists, nothing more."
At first I had an idea to use the "Tiny Planets" effect which you get in live-action by using a 360 degree camera. After a couple weeks working on it, I pitched it, and it got a good response, but the next day I was told "ok this would still be too expensive. You gotta do something else."
It took a while to figure out another solution, but I started to think about how Poppy and Viva are kind of mirror images, and the line "I'm seeing different when I look at you" put an image in my head of Viva upside down, outstretched hand, inviting Poppy to...I guess join her in defying gravity? I dunno!
