The House justice committee convenes on Monday, February 2, to deliberate on the impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr..
Two complaints are set to be consolidated into one by the panel chaired by Batangas 2nd District Representative Gerville “Jinky” Luistro.
The petitions were endorsed separately by Pusong Pinoy Representative Jett Nisay and the three-member Makabayan bloc, composed of ACT Teachers Representative Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Representative Sarah Elago, and Kabataan Representative Renee Co.
Both complaints cited Marcos’ role in the public works scandal and the overall budget mess, but Nisay’s petition also wants the President removed from office for allegedly enabling the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte who was then brought to The Hague, and the President’s alleged drug addiction.
Monday’s deliberations by the justice committee are set to zero in on the sufficiency of the complaints in form and substance.
If the consolidated complaint fails to pass either test, it will be dismissed, earning the President a one-year immunity from impeachment.
If the committee finds the complaint sufficient, it will notify the President of the allegations and give him time to respond to the allegations.
