In response to the deadly Bondi Beach attack, Australia has announced a nationwide gun buyback scheme, the largest since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. The Bondi attack, deemed a terrorist incident, left 15 people dead and many injured when two gunmen, reportedly motivated by Islamic State ideology, opened fire on a Jewish festival. Naveed Akram, 24, has been charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and one of committing a terrorist act, while his father, Sajid, was killed during the attack.
The new gun control measures, agreed upon by the national cabinet, aim to reduce the more than 4 million firearms currently in Australia. The buyback scheme will target surplus, newly banned, and illegal firearms, with funding shared equally between the federal and state governments. Additional reforms include limits on the number of firearms per individual, stricter licensing requirements, restrictions on legal gun types, and making Australian citizenship a condition for holding a firearm licence. A national firearms register will be accelerated, and regulators will gain better access to criminal intelligence.
Authorities have also monitored a separate group of men with extremist ideologies, who were detained briefly but posed no confirmed link to the Bondi attack. Police emphasize ongoing vigilance to prevent potential violent offences.
