Inequalities of fractions are illustrated by comparing the shaded amounts of two Fraction Bars; the greater shaded amount represents the greater the fraction. If a bar is less than half shaded, its fraction is less than 1/2. Or, a fraction can be compared to 1/2 by comparing the number of shaded parts for its bar to the total number of parts. Knowing the meaning of fraction symbols and being able to attach visual images is important for determining fraction inequalities. For example, 1/12 is less than 1/8 because if something is divided into 12 equal parts the parts are smaller than if it is divided into 8 equal parts. If the parts of two bars have the same size, it is only necessary to compare the numerators of the corresponding fractions to determine an inequality. The historical origin of the inequality symbols is explained. The video ends with a demonstration of the free interactive web game "Take A Chance" from fractionbars.com.
