Billy is sitting in his room, the heating is long dead and the roof is leaking a steady, icy rhythm onto the floorboards. It’s a South London winter that bites deep; his breath condenses into ghostly clouds that seem to mock him.
His fingers are so numb he can barely wrap them around the neck of his guitar, but he tries to practice for next Tuesday’s gig anyway, fumbling through a slow blues while the neighbors make their contempt loud and clear through the paper-thin walls.
The Landlady has had enough. Too many complaints, too much noise, and a tenant who’s perpetually skint.
She doesn't come for the rent this time; she comes with an offer of "compassion."
She sees Billy shivering in his Chelsea boots and offers him a warm place to escape the freeze, a very, very warm place.
A little later, while Billy is still wriggling in the permanent heat inside her belly, she calmly nails a "ROOM TO LET" sign to the window of the now-silent room.
The Inevitables are down a lead singer. Billy won’t be making it to the gig on Tuesday... or ever again.
"I’m looking for a fire, but I’m just a coal for her desire..."
