Why Bitumen coating is applied at Foundation?
Substructure of building is in constant contact with soil and soil moisture along with accidental attack of sewerage water/ municipal water/ flood/ rain etc.
Water ingress in building causes dampness and due to capillary action it will continue to affect the walls, paints etc and inhabitants will have a tough time living in building ( both from hygiene point of view and aesthetically). Dampness can be tackled only at construction level. After construction all dampness removal techniques are bandaid solutions and not that effective and lasting.
Water causes corrosion of reinforcement in RCC and efflorescence in brickwork
Only solution to above two problems is to use water proofing material to create a barrier between substructure and superstructure. That is where bitumen comes in picture. Owing to its water resistant nature when applied at DPC/ plinth beam level it stops the water from sub structure to going upwards in building via blocking the capillary veins .
