Are Cheat Meals Okay While Bulking Or Cutting?
http://www.SeanNal.com/articles/nutri...
Do you really need to eat "clean" foods all around the clock, 7 days a week in order to build muscle and lose fat at your maximum potential? Or is a cheat meal while cutting or bulking fine to include?
The reality is that there is no such thing as a "cheat meal" at all. "Cheat" implies that you're doing something wrong or outside of the rules, and including some higher fat or higher sugar foods in your overall bodybuilding diet is not a bad thing at all if done in moderation.
Always remember that your body only views your nutritional intake in terms of your overall diet as a whole and NOT in the context of individual food items. As long as you're getting around 80-90% of your food intake from lean proteins, minimally processed carbs and healthy fats, then having the other 10-20% come from whatever "cheat foods" you'd like is NOT going to compromise your results. This concept is often referred to as "flexible dieting" or "IIFYM" (if it fits your macros).
Don't think of it as merely having a "cheat meal once a week" - you can fit these foods into your diet virtually every single day as long as it fits into your overall calorie and macronutrient needs as a whole.
People often ask me, "are cheat days bad" or "will a cheat day ruin a diet". The key is to stop viewing it in this way and to think more in terms of what an overall, sustainable long term dieting approach would look like. Fitness is a life long endeavor, and trying to eat nothing but "clean" foods all the time is not only unrealistic but is totally unnecessary.
Again, as long as the majority of your diet is based around typical "clean" fitness foods, you'll easily be meeting your needs in terms of quality protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients. From there, including some cheat foods is not going to hurt you, and it will actually be beneficial for most people as it allows you to enjoy your diet more and increases the chances that you'll stick to it long term.
So, are cheat meals okay? Absolutely.
