The Alton Towers Resort classic water rapids ride was due to re-open in 2023 with restored water FX, mechanical improvements and a brand new audio system that would provide music to the whole attraction. The new soundtrack had to complement the existing theming, the land it was [Katanga Canyon] and provide an uplight of adventure for the guests.
Traditionally, the area and ride were inspired by Africa but there was little to no narrative. The new music score was required to fulfil the story telling. I introduced, Keith Quest, the Congo River Rapid Expedition Leader who would guide us through the journey, using walkie talkie transmissions to the raft as it navigated the wild waters.
For the soundtrack, I took inspiration from Southern countries of South Africa whilst paying homage to the existing area audio of KC. Lots of choppy, bright guitars, rhythmic horn lines, a very dance beat all set in a major key, Approx 20 minutes of music was composed for the attraction including a 15 minutes queue line track and 8 ride tracks that perfectly transition as you travel along the river.
