To make a tree fall in a desired direction, use directional felling by cutting a 70–80° "notch" (face cut) on the target side, roughly 1/3 of the diameter deep, followed by a back cut on the opposite side, leaving a 10% hinge of wood to guide the fall.
Key Steps for Directional Felling:
Assess Hazards:
Check for lean, wind direction, and surrounding obstacles.
Create the Notch:
Cut a notch (top angled cut, bottom horizontal cut) on the side you want the tree to fall.
Back Cut:
On the opposite side, make a horizontal cut about 1-2 inches higher than the notch's horizontal base.
The Hinge:
Do not cut all the way through; leave a strip of wood (hinge) to control the fall.
Use Wedges:
Insert felling wedges into the back cut to prevent the tree from sitting back and to control direction.
Escape Route: Plan and clear an escape route at a 45-degree angle away from the back of the tree.
