Since 1827 it has been the administrative centre of the island.

The population of the municipality is 3,062 residents, it is the largest and fastest growing city on the island.
The city is connected to the mainland by ferry service.
The ferry travel time from Split to Supetar is 45 minutes.
The official language is Croatian.
Since the city and the island are popular among some tourists, most of the population speaks foreign languages ​​- English, Italian, German.
