The line drawing game of Tripa Chuca is played, in variations, by children throughout Central America. A visual layer in many of Maravilla’s works, its lines are a graphic metaphor for his childhood journey to the United States, which was part of the first wave of undocumented children that arrived in the 1980s. A cancer survivor with core beliefs in the power of ritual and mutual aid, Maravilla supported the communities of undocumented and otherwise fragile peoples throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. A special game of Tripa Chuca for the Vanport Building was played with collaborators Heldáy de la Cruz and Puma Tzoc, who share Maravilla's passion for elevating undocumented person
This permanent artwork was commissioned for the Vanport Building (1810 SW 5th Avenue, Portland, 97201) through Oregon’s Percent for Art in Public Places Program, administered by the Oregon Arts Commission. One of the first of such programs in the United States, the program has placed more than 2,400 works of art in public spaces throughout our state. The Vanport Building collection was created through collaboration between the City of Portland, Portland Community College, Portland State University, Regional Arts and Culture Council, Oregon Arts Commission, and Oregon Health and Science University.
