Transcript: Drive Tesla is reporting that SpaceX has struck another major deal with EchoStar, this time acquiring its full portfolio of unpaired AWS-3 spectrum licenses for $2.6 billion in company stock, based on SpaceX’s September 2025 valuation. This adds to the $17 billion spectrum agreement the two companies made just months ago.
The AWS-3 licenses give SpaceX national coverage of uplink airwaves, a key piece of building out its next-gen Starlink Direct-to-Cell network. Combined with the AWS-4 and H-block licenses already in the works, it gives SpaceX a rare, unified mid-band spectrum footprint that supports both mobile and satellite communication.
The long-term goal is to offer text, voice, and basic data straight to regular smartphones—no dish or special hardware needed. SpaceX plans to start launching satellites with S-band payloads within two years, aiming to begin phone-based connectivity tests by late 2026.
With spectrum that's already cleared for global use, this move allows SpaceX to bypass the complexity of relying on local telecom partners like Rogers in Canada or T-Mobile in the U.S., putting it in a strong position to offer global Direct-to-Cell service.
