This short film "Filming A World Without Sun" promotes the Oscar winning documentary made by Jacques Cousteau and released in 1964. In the film, the legendary oceanographer explores Continental Shelf Station Two (or Conshelf Two), an early-1960s attempt at underwater living located 10 meters below the surface of the Red Sea off the coast of Sudan. Subjected to constant observation and medical experimentation, the six men taking part in the experiment have air, food, water, electricity and other life essentials, as well as a small two-man submarine that they can use for underwater exploration.
00:00 The film introduces the concept of modern man exploring new frontiers, not only in outer space but also on Earth, specifically highlighting the true story of the "Denise" diving saucer and the undersea city.0:52 The story begins in France, where prefabricated underwater buildings are constructed under the direction of famed undersea explorer Commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau, designed to allow men to live and work on the ocean floor for extended periods.1:11 Once completed, the prefabricated city is transported across the Mediterranean and through the Suez Canal to the Red Sea.1:30 "Conshelf 2," a coral reef off the coast of Sudan, is selected as the building site for the world's first underwater city. Cousteau, as project director and honorary mayor, has dedicated his life to undersea exploration.1:48 Cousteau predicts that one day man will walk on the seabed, driven by the vast natural resources (oil, minerals, food, gems) found on the ocean floor, which are greater than those on land. This expedition is a major step in proving man can live, work, and play underwater.2:17 Motion picture cameras are designed to follow Cousteau and his "oceannauts" through their submerged mission. The spectacular results have been fashioned into a full-length color motion picture adventure titled "World Without Sun."2:37 The oceannauts are to spend an entire month in their "watery dungeon," understanding that returning to the surface without prolonged decompression could be fatal. Silver suits identify them to surface-based divers who maintain constant surveillance to prevent accidental ascent.3:08 Routine household chores are shown, emphasizing their importance in studying human reactions to extended underwater living. Efficient communication with the surface is crucial for the men isolated on the ocean floor, utilizing modern equipment.3:34 Each oceannaut performs a full working schedule outside their aquatic home. Filming for "World Without Sun" is often hazardous, requiring interruptions, but Cousteau foresightfully set up anti-shark cages.4:01 Live specimens collected for scientific study are imprisoned in plastic bags, including unusual creatures like a bump fish, a sea devil, and a "plant that walks."4:42 The "Denise" diving saucer, resembling a flying saucer, is introduced as the world's first submarine operated entirely from an underwater base.4:52 The film concludes by stating that Jacques Cousteau's pioneering adventure will shape the world of tomorrow by extending man's knowledge of the "world without sun."
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
