The BM-30 Smerch, 9K58 Smerch or 9A52-2 Smerch-M is a Soviet heavy multiple rocket launcher. The system is intended to defeat personnel, armored, and soft targets in concentration areas, artillery batteries, command posts and ammunition depots. It was designed in the early 1980s and entered service in the Soviet Armyin 1989. When first observed by the West in 1983, it received the code MRL 280mm M1983. It is expected to be superseded by the 9A52-4 Tornado.

The 9A52-2T is a new version of the BM-30, the launcher unit is mounted to the chassis of a Czech cross-country truck Tatra 816 10x10. The multiple rocket launcher system 9A52-2T is intended for firing with rocket projectiles and for destruction of attacking means, tank, motorized and infantry units in concentration areas, on march and in combat order, of artillery battalions in concentration areas, of helicopter units at landing fields, anti-aircraft and anti-missile units on the positions, air and naval assault units and other targets. This version is developed and designed for the export market. This version was bought by the Indian army.In 2005 a contract was signed to deliver 38 units of the Smerch MLRS and associated vehicles to the Indian Army. A second contract was signed in 2007 for a second batch of 24 units. It is worth mentioning that Smerch MLRS sales to India have been under negotiations since the late 1990s. Indian rocket systems are based on locally-built Tatra 10x10 chassis to reduce unit costs. Deliveries to the Indian Army commenced in 2008.
