Don't Pass Me By is Ringo's first composition officially released on a Beatles album, even though it was first written around 1962. Paul and Ringo recorded the track across 4 sessions in June and July of 1968, with, again, a odd lineup.
The personnel for this track is very unclear, and nobody seems to agree on who played drums or piano. The basic track consisted of piano and drums, and overdubs were made for percussion, another drum track and more piano tracks. My guesses for the piano and drums tracks are the following : the basic track featured Paul on drums and Ringo on piano, since he wrote the song on piano, and for overdubs they switched around and played a bit of everything.
In every source I consulted, they all mentioned two piano tracks but in the 5.1 mix, there are 3 different piano tracks, all with 3 different endings. They are all very similar, but the endings are distinct enough for them to be different takes ; the first piano track in the deconstruction ends with 3 quarter notes (10:46), the second track ends with 2 half notes (14:19) and the third track ends with a dotted quarter note, a eighth note and a half note to end it (17:53).
The track also features Jack Fallon on fiddle/violin. Fallon said the following about the recording ; "George Martin had jotted down a 12-bar blues for me. A lot of country fiddle playing is double-stop but Paul and George Martin – they were doing the arranging – suggested I play it single note. So it wasn’t really the country sound they originally wanted. But they seemed pleased. Ringo was around too, keeping an eye on his song." Fallon's violin track can be heard without any cuts on the 2018 Deluxe box-set outtake of Don't Pass Me By, which is merged with the unused orchestral introduction by George Martin "A Beginning".
