To test the water pump on a Sage/Breville BES875 (Barista Express) coffee machine, here’s a simple guide you can follow:
⸻
Tools Needed:
• A container to catch water
• Access to mains water
• A multimeter (optional, for electrical testing)
⸻
Basic Pump Function Test:
1. Fill the Water Tank
• Make sure the water tank is full and properly seated.
• Ensure the filter isn’t blocked (try removing it for testing purposes).
2. Prime the Machine (if needed)
• If the machine hasn’t been used for a while, it might need priming. Hold the hot water button or run a shot with no portafilter.
3. Run Hot Water Mode
• Turn the Hot Water dial to activate the pump.
• Water should come out of the hot water spout steadily.
• This confirms the pump, solenoid valve, and water path are working.
4. Run a Single or Double Shot (No Coffee)
• Without any coffee in the portafilter, start a shot.
• You should hear the vibration pump and see water flow from the group head.
• If there’s no water or just a trickle, the pump might be weak or there’s a blockage.
⸻
Signs of a Faulty Pump:
• Buzzing sound, but no water
• Very weak water pressure
• Stops mid-cycle
• Runs dry even with water in tank
⸻
Advanced: Electrical Testing (Optional)
1. Unplug the machine.
2. Access the pump (inside the case – only do this if you’re confident).
3. Use a multimeter to check continuity on the pump terminals.
4. During operation, the pump should get ~230V AC (in UK models).
⸻
Let me know if you’re getting no water, weak flow, or want help opening the machine safely to test further.
