The best oils for the skin are the ones that are excellent for your own skin. When it comes to essential oils, different oils cater to different skin types and issues. Essential oils can be intensely nourishing and balancing for the skin. So whether you’re dealing with oily skin, wrinkles, or dry patches, essential oils can help.
Following a basic formula, you can use your favorite carrier oil and add the best essential oils for your skin type. Start out with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil and add 10-15 drops of essential oils, for facial oils use only 4 - 7 drops. Feel free to mix it up and experiment! Everyone’s skin is a little different, so the perfect blend for you might be different than what works for someone else. This is especially important when you might be dealing with more than one skin type. You can mix and match essential oils in your recipe to make sure you have all your bases covered.
Remember to store your oils in dark colored dropper bottles which protect them from direct light and the dropper makes it easier to use just the right amount, usually 1-2 drops is plenty if using for your face but you might need 3-4 if you have very dry skin. Also, some oils may cause phototoxic or photosensitive reactions, these include bergamot, lemon, and lime. When using these oils topically, avoidance of sunlight is recommended for up to 12 hours after use.
The following oils are good for oily skin, they have properties that tend to regulate and normalize oil production and are best if used with jojoba oil which is good for sensitive, oily skin (Grapeseed and Neem Oils are also effective):
• Sweet Orange
• Lemon
• Lime
• Bergamot
• Geranium
• Cypress
For skin that is prone to breakouts and has blemishes, these oils can be added to Tamanu oil (Jojoba and Neem Oils can also be used) to calm and prevent breakouts, and can also be applied undiluted as a spot treatment:
• Tea tree
• Geranium
• Vetiver
• Lavender
• Patchouli
If your skin tends to be dry and chapped, a deeply moisturizing oil like shea butter or cocoa butter is a good base. Argan oil and rose hip oil are also good facial oils for deep moisture (Avocado, Olive, Rosehip, and Sweet Almond Oils also work well). The essential oils that are best for dry skin types are:
• Cedarwood
• Geranium
• Myrrh
• Sandalwood
• Palmarosa
• Roman or German Chamomile
Argan oil and rose hip oil are some of the best oils for aging skin that tends to be prone to wrinkles and sagging (Evening Primrose is also effective on aging skin). Use them as a carrier oil and then add these essential oils to nourish aging skin:
• Tangerine
• Ylang-ylang
• Patchouli
• Cypress
• Sandalwood
• Lavender
• Frankincense
• Rose
• Palmarosa
For Combination Skin a base of jojoba oil is recommended, since it is nourishing for dry skin but still tends to be friendly to oily skin (apricot kernel and sunflower oils can also be used). Some of the best essential oils for skin that tends to be both dry and oily are:
• Patchouli
• Lavender
• Bergamot
• Sweet Orange
Sea Buckthorn Oil is an effective oil on troubled skin and some of the best essential oils for skin with red marks or dark spots are:
• Lavender
• Lemon
• Frankincense
Feel free to mix and match these oils, in order to find the perfect blend that works for your skin. You may also have to experiment with different oils for your face, in particular. Start out with small batches until you find the ones that perform best for you. Happy Blending Everyone.
