Nmap (Network Mapper) is a free, open-source network scanner that helps you understand your network's security and health. It's used by network administrators, security professionals, and ethical hackers for a variety of tasks, including:

1. Security: Identifying vulnerabilities and security loopholes, and detecting nodes and operating systems
2. Troubleshooting: Identifying unexpected ports and systems
3. Network diagnostics: Understanding network devices and services
4. Network inventory: Managing service upgrade schedules, and monitoring host or service uptime

Nmap works by sending packets and analyzing the responses to discover hosts and services on a network. It can quickly scan large networks, but also works well against single hosts.
