Rocco Coronel concludes E4 Winter Championship with a pair of podium results; tied on top of final rookie points’ standings

ALCAÑIZ (15 March 2026) – With a pair of podium finishes from the third and final race weekend at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Alcañiz, Spain, 15-year-old Dutchman Rocco Coronel successfully conlcuded the season in the Spanish E4 Winter Championship. After three events and a total of nine races, the Red Bull Junior driver from the MP Motorsport team finished tied on top of the rookie championship standings. “And that’s despite the fact that I didn’t finish three times at the previous race weekend in Jarama and therefore didn’t score any points. This weekend in Aragón was a strong finish; the pace was good,” said Coronel afterwards. “That gives me confidence for the regular season in the Spanish championship, which gets underway in Valencia in a month’s time.”

Coronel was already well on the pace during Friday’s test and both free practice sessions on the 5.344-kilometre circuit. “The car was good, which gave us a solid basis to work with for the weekend. We did lose time in turns 14 and 15, before the start of the straight,” he reported. Qualifying on Saturday morning took place on a wet track. “At first we thought we could try it on slicks, but it was too wet for that, so we switched to rain tyres. That worked out well, as I set the second-fastest time, giving me a good starting grid position for the race.”

The race on Saturday around noon provided plenty of action. After an excellent start, Coronel battled in a group of three in the early stages and took the lead on the second lap with a nice move. A lap later, he was forced to defend and went wide, dropping him back to third position. The safety car then came out following an incident further down the field. Racing resumed on lap six, but after half a lap it was neutralised again after more drivers had gone off the track. Ultimately, three laps of normal racing remained, during which Coronel managed to hold on to third place. This secured his first podium finish of the weekend, making him also the best rookie on the grid.

For the short sprint race on Saturday afternoon, Coronel started from eleventh place due to the reverse grid order for the top twelve from qualifying. He immediately gained a place, but then the safety car led the field until the end of the third lap. By the time of the next safety car intervention, Coronel had gained two more places, after which another neutralisation followed. He then gained two more places, meaning that, once again behind the safety car, he crossed the finish line in sixth place. “I was really very fast in that race; I had to make up a lot of ground, but it went very well,” said Coronel. However, he did not enjoy his position for long, as the race stewards imposed a 30-second time penalty on Coronel and several others for overtaking under safety car conditions. “It was a somewhat confusing situation, with the safety car lights going out early and several drivers overtaking. It wasn’t really clear at all,” said the Dutch driver.

In Sunday’s qualifying, Coronel posted the third-fastest time, although he had been in contention for pole position until the session came to a premature end. He took second place as early as the first lap and then closed in on the race leader, allowing the two to pull away from the rest of the field. Once again, the race was neutralised twice behind the safety car, but after the restarts on lap eight and 13 respectively, Coronel successfully defended his position. A thrilling finale beckoned, but then the safety car was deployed once more, meaning the field crossed the finish line in unchanged order. Coronel ended up second overall and as the best rookie and also set the fastest lap of the race, earning him an additional championship point.

Coronel finished the season in the E4 Winter Championship level on points with his compatriot and team-mate Kasper Schormans in the rookie championship, but as Schormans had one more victory, he was able to claim the rookie title. Coronel was nonetheless pleased with the conclusion: “It was a weekend of good results, which I’m certainly happy with!”

The regular Spanish Formula 4 Championship season, in which Coronel will also be competing with MP Motorsport, gets underway on the weekend of 11 and 12 April at the Valencia circuit.
