What do we do if we have more than two vintage cast iron pans to test for lead? Testing vintage cast iron cookware for possible lead contamination is something we have to do...*if* we have reason to be suspicious. The odds of any strange pan found in the vintage cast iron treasure hunt actually being contaminated with lead, are extremely small -- but NOT impossible, depending on the circumstances. However, a typical surface lead test can cost $10 or so at a big hardware store, and the test contains two testing swabs. If we have three or more pans to test for lead, we may have to spend more money on additional tests...or, we can use a hack and spread the test out over more than two pans. Here's one way to stretch a typical lead test, to cover four separate cast iron pans rather than two.
(One warning: the testing liquid dried out very quickly, in only a few minutes of time. Using this method requires one to test the pans for lead very quickly.)
