The project:
The video series explains the essentials of international investment law and its ongoing reform. It is designed for students and those who wish to understand the core issues of international investment regulation.

Each episode provides an overview of a specific topic of international investment regulation, and it is conceived as an interview supplemented with summaries to highlight the key concepts and issues. The episodes complement each other to provide a comprehensive overview of international investment law.

Episode 1: How is transnational investment regulated? – Explains the origins of international investment law and its place within the international legal order

Episode 2: International investment law in a multipolar world – Explains political and economic tensions in the field of international investment regulation
Episode 3: How ISDS works? – Explains Investor-State dispute settlement and investment treaty arbitration
Episode 4: Host State’s regulatory space – Explains substantive law issues in international investment law and the interaction between foreign investors’ rights and host State’s regulatory action

Episode 5: Investment protection in the EU – Explains investment protection and dispute settlement in the EU and the interaction between international investment law and EU law

Episode 6: The reform of ISDS and the rule of law – Explains and critiques the rule of law aspects of international investment regulation and its reform

The fundamentals of international investment law in six episodes video series was filmed in Brussels (Fondation Universitaire) and Maastricht (Law Faculty of the Maastricht University, Bonnefanten Museum, Book Store Dominicanen) in January 2023.

The video program is funded by the EU Jean Monnet Project on a Rule-Based Multilateral Investment System (Jean Monnet Project EUChMIS 620930-EPP-1-2020-1-NL-EPPJMO-PROJECT) of the METRO Institute of the Maastricht University.

Dr Ivana Damjanovic is a Lecturer at the Canberra Law School. She is the author of The European Union and International Investment Law Reform: Between Aspirations and Reality (Cambridge University Press, 2023).


Professor Nicolas de Sadeleer is full professor at UCLouvain Saint-Louis Brussels.
