It’s rumoured that in 1885, Dr. William Laidlaw Purves caught sight of the undulating links land that would become Royal St. George’s from the nearby St. Clement’s church and subsequently went about establishing the club and course. A proud Scot and strong golfer in his own right, he helped pioneer the development of the sport south of the border. Ever since it opened for play in 1887, the club has enjoyed a rich history where many of the great professionals and amateurs have visited.

Royal St. George’s is not just one of the greatest golf courses in England, but an important part of the rich tapestry of British golf. The club was the first to host the Open Championship outside of Scotland and has also held more Opens than any other non-Scottish course. The huge dunes that are its defining feature provide endless drama—whether it’s the enormous mound housing the iconic 40-foot-high bunker you play over on the 4th or the iconic par-three 6th hole, “Maiden,” named after the towering dunes encompassing the green.
