Moonlit Masquerade
The bells of Blackthorne City rang midnight as the masquerade began.
Music spilled from the great marble hall of Castle Valenhurst, where nobles in jeweled masks laughed beneath chandeliers that burned like captive stars. Silk gowns glided across polished floors. Golden goblets clinked together in careless celebration.
But beneath the velvet and perfume, something darker walked among them.
Adrian Valenhurst stood alone near the balcony doors, dressed in a black cloak and a silver wolf mask. His eyes watched the dancers, though his thoughts were far from the music.
The moon had risen.
And it was full.
He gripped the railing as the familiar ache stirred deep in his bones.
“Not tonight,” he whispered.
For years he had fought it—the beast clawing beneath his skin. The curse that lived in his blood. Tonight he had hoped to forget it, if only for a few hours.
But the wolf inside him had awakened.
You cannot hide forever, a voice growled within his mind.
Adrian clenched his jaw.
“I am not you.”
The voice laughed.
I am exactly what you are.
A sudden chill swept across the balcony.
Adrian turned.
A woman stepped through the crowd toward him, her gown a deep crimson that shimmered like fresh blood in candlelight. A delicate mask framed eyes that glowed with quiet knowing.
Selene.
The witch who had cursed him.
Or perhaps the only one who could free him.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Adrian said quietly.
Selene tilted her head, studying him.
“And miss the moment the mask finally breaks?” she replied. “Never.”
Thunder rolled somewhere beyond the mountains.
The moonlight poured through the balcony doors like liquid silver.
Adrian staggered.
The transformation had begun.
His heartbeat thundered. His fingers trembled as claws threatened to tear through his gloves.
“You said there was a cure,” he growled.
Selene’s smile was sad.
“There is,” she said softly. “But not the one you hoped for.”
The music in the hall slowed into a haunting waltz.
Dancers spun, unaware that death stood among them.
“You cannot destroy the wolf,” Selene continued. “It is your truth.”
Adrian’s reflection shimmered in the glass doors.
His eyes were glowing now.
Golden.
“You cursed me!” he shouted.
“No,” she said.
“I revealed you.”
The beast surged forward inside him, furious and hungry.
Let me out.
Adrian dropped to one knee, fighting the storm raging through his body.
“I won’t hurt them,” he gasped.
“You already have,” Selene whispered.
The moon rose higher.
Bones cracked.
His mask fell to the floor.
Gasps erupted from the ballroom as guests turned toward the balcony.
Where a man had stood, a creature now rose.
A towering wolf, fur black as midnight, eyes burning like twin suns.
For a moment the beast hesitated.
Inside the monster, Adrian still lived.
Still fought.
Still begged for control.
Then Selene stepped forward.
Fearlessly.
She placed a hand against the wolf’s chest.
“Listen,” she said.
The beast growled.
But it did not strike.
“You are not two souls,” she whispered.
“You are one.”
The wolf’s breathing slowed.
The rage faded, replaced by something deeper.
Acceptance.
The wolf lifted its head toward the moon and howled.
A sound that shook the castle walls.
Inside the ballroom, the masquerade ended in chaos as guests fled into the night.
But on the balcony, beneath the silver sky, the wolf stood still.
No longer a prisoner.
No longer hiding.
Adrian Valenhurst was gone.
But something stronger had taken his place.
And in the moonlit silence, the wolf finally understood:
The monster had never been the curse.
It had been the mask.
