After “Either Way”, a disc with modest instrumentation but which uses strings in four pieces, Anne Ducros, the only French singer with Cécile McLorin Salvant who managed to obtain the Jazz Vocal Prize from the Jazz Academy ( in 2001 with “Purple Songs”), revives the orchestral splendor of “Ella…My Dear”, a 2010 album arranged by Ivan Jullien in which a harmony orchestra (forty-five musicians) accompanies him. Combining strings and brass while leaving room for a few soloists, “Brother Brother!”, his new album dedicated to his recently deceased brother and recorded with a symphony orchestra, appears to be one of the great successes of his already long career.
Recorded in Italy (Milan and Catania) and in Paris, “Brother Brother!” benefits from the neat and convincing arrangements of Giuseppe Emmanuele with whom Anne has already worked. Often at the piano, the latter also wrote Petals, the only original theme of the album. Assuming a commercial project (in the good sense of the term), the singer covers proven hits, famous songs associated with Marvin Gaye, Sting, Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder, Juliette Gréco, Yves Montand and a few others. A record produced “American style” in which there is no shortage of good ideas. The introduction of What's Going On on the acoustic guitar, the orchestra gradually returning to better radiate its melody of colors, remains a discovery. The vibraphone that blends subtly with the strings in La Bicyclette is another. As for the successes, they are also numerous in this flamboyant opus. You are so Beautiful and the mischievous Désabillez Moi are beautifully arranged and sung. Samba Saravah inherits shortly before its coda a short passage in scat whose singing and silky onomatopoeia stick perfectly to the music.
Because using her voice as a real instrument, Anne Ducros still impresses as much. His articulation, his phrasing, his accuracy arouse admiration. His often dizzying scats reflect his great craft. She knows how to vibrate the air coming out of her lungs, hold a note for a long time, make the onomatopoeia she invents dance. Whether she speaks in French or in English, her perfect pronunciation makes it possible to understand everything she sings, which is becoming rare among singers performing today. Even laden with chromatic notes, the sound space always leaves room for voices and soloists, Olivier Ker Ourio's harmonica in What's Going On, Lionel Belmondo's tenor saxophone in At Last. Less famous, the Italian musicians also invited are just as talented, whether Giulio Visibelli on soprano saxophone in Fragile or Mimmo Gaglio on clarinet in Petals, a very beautiful piece. We must also salute the beautiful guitar of Olivier Louvel and the usual rhythm section of Anne, Gilles Nicolas (double bass and electric bass) and Bruno Castellucci on drums, Vincent Bruynincks, a student of the great Nathalie Loriers, replacing Benoît de Mesmay at the piano.
