Soft pastels are wonderful and addictive. A good way to start is with a small set of pastels. Here I am using Great American's 18-piece starter kit. In my other videos, I have used starter boxes of soft pastels by Schminke, Sennelier and Unison.
In this video, I talk about how I use negative space to create a pastel painting. Negative space is the area around what we perceive as the object or subject. Often we think about negative space as the background i.e. something less important than the subject. But if we take the view that the space is just as important as the object, then we can start thinking (and seeing) in terms of shape and pattern rather than individually named bits and pieces. And in this way, we'll come out with a more cohesive and powerful painting.
