Trains at... York (August 2024)
The original York Station opened in 1839 by George Hudson. It was temporary and situated outside of the City walls. It was succeded by what is today known as the Old Station, built in 1841. The Old Station, designed by George Townsend Andrews, ran along the York City Wall and was built in an Italianate style. It featured a limestone facade with a large Station Hotel. The train shed roofs were constructed from iron. The Station Hotel was the first to be incorporated into the main station building and was named The Royal Station Hotel after Queen Victoria's visit in 1854.
The present day York Station opened in 1877 after the Old Station couldn't provide efficient through running services to the North.
The Station was built just outside the City Walls where it could bypass the built up city centre and features three large cast iron and glass semi circular train sheds. It was designed by the North Eastern Railway architects Thomas Prosser and William Peachey. The Station building was constructed from brick and has a large entrance and ticket hall. When the Station first opened it was the largest Station in the world with 13 platforms.
York became home to some famous trains too...
In 1923 it became the headquarters of the London & North Eastern Railway or LNER and was one of the stops for the famous Flying Scotsman and Mallard steam trains. In 1948, after Nationalisation, British Rail began operating the Deltic Diesel Class 55 Locomotives which once roared through the large overall sheds. Until recently it was also the home of the famous Intercity 125 or HST. In the 1980s York went through a large modernisation program which included the fitting of overhead wires and a new track layout. This was done in preparation for the arrival of the then new electric Intercity 225 trains.
Today York Station has become a busy Interchange and hub for passengers travelling all over the North East. It is currently managed by the modern day LNER and is served primarily by their Azuma fleet of trains but it is also served by Northern Trains, TransPennine Express, Grand Central, Cross Country and Lumo services. It is also situated next to the National Railway Museum (NRM) and has become a flagship location for train spotters all over the world.
