On Saturday morning, Israel and the US launched a war on Iran, with Donald Trump declaring the start of “major combat operations” and calling on Iranians to rise up against their government.

Within hours, the conflict consumed much of the Middle East. Iran launched successive waves of ballistic missiles at Israel, with few landing in the country. People in Damascus, south Lebanon and Amman were shaken by explosions above their heads as Israel intercepted incoming Iranian missiles in the sky.

Iran also targeted US military bases in Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Bahrain, as well as conducted a strike in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Gulf states reacted with outrage, condemning the attacks and saying that they reserved the right to respond.

Video posted to social media showed the moment an Iranian missile struck the US Navy base, and another video showed a thick grey plume of smoke rising from near the small island state’s coastline as sirens wailed. Bahrain said the service centre of the U.S. Fifth Fleet had been subjected to a missile attack.
