Portarlington is on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, around a 90 minute drive, or a 70 minute ferry ride from Melbourne. As well as being famous for its beautiful coastline and nearby wineries, mussels have helped to put the little coastal community on the map.
Lance Wiffen has been a Portarlington mussel farmer for 37 years, and he really appreciates how good the mussels are for the environment, as well as how good they taste! Recently Lance decided to delve into tourism and started Portarlington Mussel Tours. It’s a great way to share his passion for the local area and educate visitors on the importance of shellfish to the health of Port Phillip Bay.
The cool deep water of the bay is the perfect environment for mussels, oysters and other shellfish, which in turn increase water quality, biodiversity and numbers of fish. Most certainly a tour for seafood foodies, from the moment they hit the water, Livinia was served fat and juicy Angasi oysters, followed by scallops straight out of the frypan.
After learning all about farming and harvesting mussels, it was time for a cooking demonstration and of course the all important tasting! Sweet in flavour, high in protein and low in fat, the exquisite blue mussels were served accompanied by premium local wine.
There’s a regular ferry from Melbourne for day trippers, but staying a couple of days is also a nice option. The iconic Grand Hotel has undergone a multimillion dollar refurbishment, bringing modern sophistication and style to the 1888 building. In prime position on the main street overlooking Port
Phillip Bay, the hotel has 18 beautifully designed rooms, bars, bistro, beer garden, and fantastic
atrium courtyard.
