I show you in a short and easy presentation what wheat breeding is and what wheat breeding has achieved the last decades in Germany. Compared to 1960ies, modern wheat cultivars have over 2t/ha more grain yield, higher nitrogen use efficiency and lower carbon footprint per kg wheat produced. In parallel, they are better adapted to climate and diseases in nowadays fields enabling the redution of pesticides without negative conditions. Wheat breeding contributes therefore largely and sustainably to food security and stability but requires long-term investments due to a long lasting research & development strategy.
