📖 Background: Who Was Siraj-ud-Daulah?
Siraj-ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, ascended the throne in 1756. He was just 23 years old, bold, passionate, and determined to resist the growing influence of the British East India Company in his region. He was wary of foreign interference and took strong steps to assert his authority over the trade practices of European powers. But he was young and surrounded by greedy courtiers and deceitful allies, who were secretly plotting his downfall.
🔥 The Betrayal That Changed India Forever
One of the most infamous betrayals in Indian history occurred when Mir Jafar, Siraj’s own commander-in-chief, colluded with the British in return for the promise of becoming Nawab. Along with wealthy bankers like Jagat Seth and the cunning Omichund, Mir Jafar ensured that the army would not fight on the day of battle.
Siraj went to Plassey believing he had an army of 50,000. But in truth, only a fraction of that force truly supported him. The rest stood aside, following the orders of their new secret master—Robert Clive.
⚔️ The Battle of Plassey – June 23, 1757
The battlefield near Murshidabad became the stage for a showdown between the ambitious East India Company and the young Nawab of Bengal. Despite his numerical superiority, Siraj was unaware that his most trusted generals had already sold him out.
Robert Clive, commanding a much smaller British force of around 3,000 men, exploited the betrayal. The British fired cannons and advanced strategically. Mir Jafar and his troops remained motionless, betraying their king in full view of history.
After hours of confusion and combat, Siraj’s forces retreated. Siraj-ud-Daulah fled, only to be captured and brutally murdered days later. His body was paraded, and a new puppet Nawab—Mir Jafar—was installed by the British.
📉 Aftermath: The Beginning of Colonial Rule
The Battle of Plassey wasn’t just a defeat—it marked the end of Indian independence in one of its richest provinces. Bengal, once a thriving economic hub, was soon plundered. The British East India Company used its newfound power to collect taxes, amass wealth, and build an empire—turning a trading company into a colonial power.
India’s colonial nightmare began here, on the fields of Plassey.
