Demonstration of Sun Taiji style 97 form. Hosted by Li Deying.
Sun Style is the youngest of the five major family styles of Tai Chi. Master Qiu perfectly illustrates its unique features:
High Stances: Unlike the Chen or Yang styles, Sun style uses higher stances, which makes it more agile and accessible for practitioners of all ages.
Nimble Footwork (Huo Bu): Sun style is often called "Nimble Step Tai Chi." You can see that whenever she steps forward, the back foot almost always follows (a technique called Gen Bu). This maintains balance and allows for quick movement.
Open and Close Hands (Kai He): A signature move of this style is the "Open-Close" hand gesture in front of the chest. This is used to regulate breathing and synchronize the movement of internal energy (Qi).
2. Technical Execution and Principles
Master Qiu Huifang’s movements are considered "textbook perfection." She is following several core internal martial arts principles:
Fluidity and Continuity: Her movements flow like a "running river" or "drifting clouds." There is no visible beginning or end to any single move; the energy is never broken.
Internal Power over Physical Force: She demonstrates Song (active relaxation). While her body looks soft, there is a hidden internal structure and strength.
Coordination: Every movement is driven by the waist. When the waist turns, the hands and feet follow in perfect harmony.
3. Key Movements Captured in the Video
The Opening (Qi Shi): She begins by calming the mind and centering her breath to transition from "stillness" to "motion."
Cloud Hands (Yun Shou): Seen around the 0:48 mark, these circular movements are used to deflect attacks and maintain a continuous defensive sphere around the body.
Slow Kicks and Balance: At various points (e.g., around 2:20), she performs incredibly slow, controlled kicks. This requires immense core strength, leg stability, and mental focus.
Single Whip: A common Tai Chi movement, but in Sun Style, it is executed with a more compact and upright posture compared to other styles.
Why this video is significant:
Qiu Huifang is famous for her "aesthetic precision." In the Wushu community, her performance is used as a standard for judging how Sun-style Tai Chi should look. She maintains a straight spine, "sunken" shoulders, and "heavy" elbows, creating a look of effortless grace that conceals high-level martial skill.
In summary: She is performing a moving meditation that serves three purposes simultaneously: a health-boosting exercise, a sophisticated martial art sequence, and a method for cultivating internal energy (Qi).
