Description: The Matrix Model is a proven, evidence-based treatment for individuals suffering from chemical dependency. Developed, refined, evaluated and validated through research over the past 25 years, it has been recognized as one of the few evidence-based programs for substance abuse disorders and has been listed on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. It's a manualized treatment providing psycho-education to individuals and families in a group dynamic atmosphere.

This presentation will identify basic principles of addiction, incorporating a history, research and overview of the Matrix Model for addiction treatment. Whittaker will outline some of the critical, distinguishing features of the model, as well as identify specific populations that have benefited greatly from this innovative model. In addition, attendees will learn an effective group-treatment strategy that can be applied to adolescents and adults with chemical dependency issues.

Bio: Dr. Katheryn Whittaker is a licensed marriage and family therapist and licensed professional clinical counselor, currently working at the Matrix Institute on Addictions in West Los Angeles, California, where she serves as director of clinical services. Dr. Whittaker also has worked with Orange County Mental Health, providing outpatient mental health services to community members impacted by mental illness, substance abuse and trauma.

She is an approved supervisor for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, California Division (AAMFT-CA) and serves on the Educational Foundation Board of Directors of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (CAMFT), where she is also an approved supervisor. Whittaker is a clinical member of the International Family Therapy Association (IFTA) and is a sought-after speaker who has presented across the country as well in Iceland, Colombia and Turkey.
