Italy’s Po River: From Venice to the Alps | Europe's Waterways | Episode 1

Описание: This episode takes us through northern Italy. Starting in the lagoon city of Venice, the journey follows Italy’s longest river, the Po. From its delta, we travel by way of Cremona, Vercelli and Turin up to its source in the Cottian Alps.

In Venice, meteorologist Marco Favaro and his colleagues keep an eye on the weather and water levels every day. Tides have started to rise higher and more frequently in recent years. A bit south of Venice, the Po flows into the Adriatic. The vast delta is a paradise for many animals – and for mussel breeders.

Further ppstream, the journey ventures through the Pianura Padana, Italy’s most important agricultural and industrial region. In Cremona, Angelo Sperzaga teaches the ancient craft of violin making. Centuries ago, Stradivari had the wood for his instruments transported on the river. Today, water still plays an important role in violin production. Past Cremona, an impressive hydropower plant produces sustainable electricity. A new fish ladder helps migratory species upstream.

The province of Pavia is a paradise for catfish anglers. Guiseppe Errani is a professional in catching the freshwater giants. The Alps come in sight, the Po is getting narrower and only partially navigable. We reach the flat rice fields of Piedmont. Each spring, they are flooded with water from the Po river.

Further upstream lies Turin, the birthplace of rowing in Italy. Boat builder Marcello Renna manufactures individual rowing boats for his customers. Past Turin, after a journey of over 400 kilometres, we reach the source of the Po in the Cottian Alps. Here, ecologists Francesca Bona and Stefano Fenoglio research the threats to alpine waters from climate change.
