Описание:
Stephen is giving a speech before the Sanhedrin. In verses 9–16 he summarizes the story of Joseph to make a spiritual point about Israel’s history and their rejection of God’s messengers.
1. Joseph Was Rejected by His Brothers (vv. 9–10)
“The patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt; but God was with him…”
Meaning:
Joseph’s brothers were jealous and rejected him.
But their rejection did not stop God’s plan.
God stayed with Joseph, gave him favor, and raised him to power in Egypt.
Stephen’s point:
Israel has a pattern of rejecting the very people God sends.
2. God Used Joseph to Save His Family (vv. 11–14)
A famine came, and Joseph’s brothers went to Egypt for food… Joseph made himself known to them… Jacob went down to Egypt with seventy-five people.
Meaning:
God used Joseph—the rejected brother—to bring salvation to the entire family.
Joseph becomes a type of the Messiah:
Rejected at first
Later revealed
Ultimately becomes the source of life and deliverance
Stephen’s point:
Just as the brothers rejected Joseph, Israel has rejected Yeshua—but God is still working through Him to bring salvation.
3. The Family of Israel Moved to Egypt (vv. 15–16)
Jacob died, and so did our fathers… their bodies were brought to Shechem…
Meaning:
This section summarizes the transition of Israel into Egypt.
It sets up the next part of Stephen’s story: the Exodus.
Stephen’s point:
Even during long periods of suffering (like Egypt), God is guiding Israel’s story.
THEMES AND SIGNIFICANCE
1. God Works Through Rejection
Joseph was rejected by his own brothers.
Yeshua was rejected by His own people.
But God turned both rejections into salvation.
2. God’s Presence Is Not Limited to the Land or the Temple
Joseph experienced God’s favor in Egypt, outside the Promised Land.
This supports Stephen’s argument that God is not confined to the Temple.
3. God’s Faithfulness in Suffering
Even in famine, exile, and betrayal, God was orchestrating His plan.
4. Joseph as a Foreshadowing of Yeshua
Stephen is hinting strongly:
Both were beloved by their father
Both were rejected by their brothers
Both suffered unjustly
Both were exalted
Both brought salvation
5. Israel’s Repeated Pattern of Rejecting Deliverers
Stephen’s central charge against the Sanhedrin:
They rejected Moses
They rejected the prophets
They rejected Joseph
And now they have rejected the Messiah
SUMMARY IN ONE SENTENCE
Acts 7:9–16 shows that although Joseph was rejected by his brothers, God used him to bring salvation—just as God used Yeshua, whom Israel also rejected—revealing a consistent biblical pattern.
