In this video, I visualized every blockbuster store opening and closure across the United States (from the 1985 to 2025). The dataset is based on publicly available records of Blockbuster store history, capturing the full rise and fall of the chain over 4 decades. In cases where only the year was available, a random month and day were chosen; if only the month and year were available, a random day was chosen.
The animation shows each store appearing on the map as it opens, then disappearing when it closes. A counter tracks the total number of open stores over time, while a racing bar chart highlights the states with the most locations. Together, they illustrate how Blockbuster expanded rapidly to become a retail giant, and how it has since declined to just one store left in Bend, Oregon.
