A motte and bailey is a type of castle built across England and Wales after the Norman
conquest in 1066. William the Conqueror built motte and bailey castles to assert his
control over his kingdom and intimidate his enemies. Motte and baileys were cheap and
easy to build, but were made of timber which caught fire easily and rotted over time.
Examples of motte and bailey castles are Windsor Castle and Cardiff Castle.
