This is the full version of the Elimination Reactions Lecture on our organic chemistry course for undergraduate students of chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sceinces, and medicine. We will begin with the classification of the elimination reactions, and continue with the three general mechanisms of β-Elimination: E1, E1cB, and E2. Then we will discuss the energy profiles of these three mechanisms and inspect their 3D animations. After that we will discuss the rate laws of E1, E2, and E1cB mechanisms: learn the concept of the rate-determining step, and by using the formerly discussed energy profiles evaluate the rate-determining step for every mechanism. Then, we will look at some examples of the E1 mechanism in living organisms, and examine the influence of different factors on the E1 mechanism, such as carbocation stability, leaving group ability, the polarity of solvents, and base concentrations. We will repeat the same steps for the E2 mechanism, looking at factors that influence it. Then we will explore a beautiful real-life example of the E2 mechanism in nature that takes place in the famous citric acid cycle in our body. Lastly, we will look at how the E1cB mechanism is influenced by different factors, such as carbanion stability, leaving group ability, polarity of solvents, and base concentrations. Pleasant viewing!
