During the administration of Donald Trump, the United States Department of Commerce imposed preliminary tariffs of up to 126% on solar panels imported from India.
The US government says Indian solar companies receive support such as subsidies, cheap land, and low-interest loans from the government. Because of this help, Indian companies can sell solar panels at very low prices in the US market.
According to the US, this hurts American solar manufacturers, stops new investment, and affects jobs. The complaint was filed by the Alliance for American Solar Manufacturing and Trade, which argued that cheap imports could damage the local solar industry.
India is not the only country affected. Solar panels from Indonesia and Laos are also facing heavy tariffs, but India’s 126% duty has received the most attention.
