The Ancient Synagogue in Gush Halav

Описание: The first historical mention of Gush Halav is in Yosef ben Matityahu’ book from the 1st century, who writes on the town part in the Great Revolt that took place during the years 66-70. Yosef writes that Gush Halav was a town, whose inhabitants were peace-loving and most of them were farmers. A Jewish settlement existed here from the time of the Second Temple until the beginning of the Ottoman period in the 15th century. Apparently, individual Jews continued to live here until the 19th century. Today, the Arab village of Jish is built on the remains of the town of Gush Halav.
In Gush Halav there are the remains of two ancient synagogues, one in the wadi of Gush Halav brook, few hundred meters from here, which we will be visiting shortly and it will be our main focus today, and the 2nd synagogue, not much left of it, was here at the top of the town. Today the church of the Greek Catholic community of Gush Halav - Mar Boutros is located here. The builders of the church used, also the stones of the synagogue, and even today it is possible to notice, near to the west of the church, its ancient remains. This synagogue was probably from the Second Temple period.
