Citing St. Augustine, Pope Leo compared the proud man to someone who hides his wounds from the doctor, and the humble one to a patient who lays them bare and finds healing.

“It is not surprising that it was the tax collector who went away cured, since he was not ashamed to show where he felt pain.”
