Meet Dobri Dobrev — “The Saint of Bailovo,” Bulgaria.
Although best known for his kindness at age 99, he passed away in February 2018 at the age of 103. A World War II veteran who lost his hearing during the war, Dobri was known for walking between 10 and 40 kilometers each day from his village of Bailovo to the capital city of Sofia. Dressed in homemade clothes and worn leather shoes, he would spend his days humbly asking for donations.
Well-known around Sofia’s churches for bowing in gratitude to every donor, it was only later revealed that Dobri had donated every cent he collected — over €40,000 — to help restore crumbling Bulgarian monasteries and to pay utility bills for orphanages. He lived solely on his modest state pension of €80 per month, quietly dedicating his life to others.
