Join, Carly York, the Catholic Cantor, for traditional Morning Prayer (Lauds) from the Divine Office on Good Friday, the most solemn day in the Church year. This complete Catholic Liturgy of the Hours service is designed to prepare your heart for the Good Friday Passion service, which most local parishes in the United States celebrate at 3PM. Pray this Morning Prayer, attend your parish's Good Friday liturgy, then spend the rest of the day in sacred silence and reflection.
Why Morning Prayer for Good Friday?
Good Friday is unlike any other day. Today, Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. At approximately 3:00 PM (the ninth hour), He breathed His last: "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" (Luke 23:46).
I'm sharing this Morning Prayer (Lauds) service so you can begin Good Friday in prayer, preparing your heart for the solemn afternoon liturgy at your parish. After the 3PM service, I strongly encourage you to remain in silence—no screens, no YouTube, no distractions. To encourage that, I am launching this YouTube prayer service for the morning. This is the day the Lord was crucified. Give yourself quiet time to rest and reflect on the wonderful love Christ showed for you on the Cross.
What is Good Friday?
Good Friday commemorates the Passion and death of Jesus Christ. The Church observes a solemn fast—Catholics ages 18-59 are required to fast (one full meal, two smaller meals), and all Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat. The traditional Good Friday service at 3PM includes:
-- The Liturgy of the Word (Passion according to John)
-- The Veneration of the Cross
-- Holy Communion (from hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday)
There is no Mass on Good Friday. The tabernacle stands empty. The altar is stripped bare. We wait at the foot of the cross.
What is Morning Prayer (Lauds)?
Morning Prayer, also called Lauds, is one of the principal hours of the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours). On Good Friday, Morning Prayer takes on profound significance as we begin the day when our Savior died for us.
What You'll Experience in This Good Friday Service:
-- Opening hymn "What Wondrous Love Is This" - A traditional American folk hymn perfect for Good Friday
-- Psalm 51 - The great penitential psalm, with the antiphon: "God did not spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all"
-- Canticle from Habakkuk 3:2-4 - "O Lord, I have heard your renown and feared"
-- Psalm 147 - "Praise the Lord, Jerusalem"
-- Sacred reading from Isaiah 52:13-15 - The Suffering Servant prophecy
Canticle of Zechariah from the Gospel of Luke 1:68-75
-- Good Friday intercessions focused on Christ's Passion
-- The Lord's Prayer (Our Father)
-- Special Good Friday Responsory:
Instead of the usual responsory, on Good Friday we pray:
"For our sake Christ was obedient, accepting even death, death on a cross."
