Long Range Hunting | Series Introduction

Описание: This video is an introduction to Long Hunting.

The goal is to help new hunters, or experienced hunters, obtain the correct combination of equipment, skill and understanding to extend their effective ethical hunting range.

It will have a strong emphasis on maintaining good ethics, attention to detail and discipline.

This is a beginner series covering the basics of long range shooting.

It will be focused on hunters using “off the shelf” factory rifles and ammunition combinations. Therefore I will limit the context of the series to 500m as a maximum range. This is the range I feel most factory rifles and ammunition can ethically shoot to.
500m and onwards, in my experience, is where new skill sets and sometimes additional equipment is necessary to achieve a ethical 1st round harvest. This includes quality hand-loaded ammunition, and a more advanced understanding of the effects of atmospheric conditions, earth effects and advanced ballistics.

This series will cover:

-What equipment you will need and accuracy requirements. Safety, and when not to take a shot.

-How to correctly set up and use the required equipment, considering the operation of the features on this equipment and any attachments you may use.

Different material expansion rates.

-Scope features essential for long range accuracy, including understanding the different units of angular measurement.

-fitting the rifle system to the shooter to enable correct body and optical positioning.

A basic breakdown of internal ballistics and the order of events after the trigger is squeezed.
This will Include understanding Harmonic vibrations caused by the transfer of energy when the rifle is fired. Twist rate and stability. Rigidity.

-Trigger control

Bore conditioning and cleaning. Maintaining consistency to ensure predictable velocities and 1st round accuracy.
Training and recording data.

Understanding external ballistics and the effects on consistency and accuracy at longer ranges.

-The effect of wind, how to read it and estimate speed. How to deal with multiple winds from different directions.
Spin drift.

How to input the correct data and create a firing solution. How to fine tune and true the data of that firing solution to the rifle system to validate accuracy.

-Controlling Recoil effectively. This will be in real field conditions using minimal equipment. It will be achieved by utilising the correct body positions to manage recoil consistently in a range of different applications, including steep angled shots.
This will also cover understanding how the bore axis is effected during the force of recoil. Natural point of aim.

-Understanding the performance of different types of projectiles and their construction at different ranges. This will include where to aim on the animal and the type of expansion we can expect to maximise effectiveness for an ethical harvest.
