China and Germany have pledged to elevate ties as they seek to rebalance relations amid global uncertainties. Chinese President Xi Jinping told visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Beijing on February 26, 2026, that he was willing to work with Merz to “continuously advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Germany to new levels”. The China visit, Merz’s first since taking office in May, comes as Europe rebalances ties with Beijing under a more assertive Washington foreign policy led by US President Donald Trump. Merz is the latest of several European political leaders to visit China this year.
