In this video, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds perform a "Five-Card Loop" maneuver, which is a formation loop performed by the lead aircraft and four wingmen where the five aircraft complete a 360-degree loop together.
In this advanced maneuver, the lead pilot and four wingmen fly in close formation to execute the loop, requiring significant skill and coordination from all pilots involved to maintain formation and control during the high-G maneuver.
The success of the Five-Card Loop relies on the "blind trust" and coordination among the five Thunderbird pilots. These maneuvers are performed at high speeds, often between 450 and 500 mph, and at low altitudes, sometimes as close as 18 inches apart, but not supersonic. Performing a loop in a close formation is extremely dangerous and leaves little time to react to a mistake.
This video was filmed at the Gulfcoast Salute Airshow in Panama City Beach.
